As Pupify grows across Canada and expands into the United States, we’ve introduced a Breeder Code of Care & Ethics to clearly outline the standards we expect from breeders using our platform. Finding the right puppy should be about more than finding a cute photo online.
Behind every puppy is a breeder, a mother dog, a litter and a series of decisions that affect the health and welfare of those dogs long before a puppy joins its new family.
As Pupify grows across Canada and expands into the United States, we believe it’s important to be clear about what we expect from breeders who use our platform.
That’s why we’ve introduced the Pupify Breeder Code of Care & Ethics.
The Code establishes a common set of expectations centred around responsible breeding, animal welfare, transparency and informed puppy placement.
Why We Created the Code
Animal welfare and breeding requirements aren’t identical everywhere.
Canada has federal, provincial, territorial and municipal requirements, while breeders in the United States may be subject to federal, state and local requirements depending on where and how they operate.
Pupify isn’t here to replace those laws.
Instead, our Code provides a baseline for the kind of responsible practices we expect from breeders using Pupify, while requiring breeders to follow the laws and regulations that apply in their own jurisdiction.
At the centre of it is a simple principle:
The welfare of the dog comes first.
What Does the Pupify Breeder Code Cover?
The Code looks at the entire breeding and puppy-placement process—not simply what appears in an advertisement.
It includes expectations around:
- Responsible breeding decisions
- Appropriate breed-specific health screening
- Veterinary care
- Pregnancy and whelping
- Puppy development and socialization
- Safe and clean living environments
- Nutrition and access to clean water
- Honest and accurate puppy listings
- Documentation and health information
- Thoughtful puppy placement
- Transparency with prospective families
- Clear contracts and deposit terms
- Responsibility for dogs after placement
- Compliance with applicable animal-welfare and breeding laws
Pupify also maintains a minimum placement age of eight weeks for puppies listed through the platform. If the law where a breeder operates requires puppies to remain with the breeder longer, that law must be followed.
And eight weeks should be viewed as a minimum—not a requirement that every puppy leave at exactly eight weeks.
Health Testing Matters
Responsible breeding involves understanding the health concerns that may affect a particular breed.
There isn’t one health test that makes sense for every dog.
Depending on the breed, appropriate screening may involve evaluations for hips, elbows, patellas, eyes, heart conditions, genetic diseases or other known hereditary concerns.
Breeders and puppy families can also consult breed-specific health screening recommendations through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
Our Code encourages breeders to follow appropriate breed-specific recommendations and veterinary guidance and to be prepared to discuss relevant health-testing results with prospective puppy families.
It also makes an important distinction:
A DNA breed identification test is not the same thing as comprehensive breed-specific health testing.
For puppy families, asking what health testing has been completed—and why—is a reasonable part of choosing a breeder.
Raising Puppies Is About More Than Physical Health
Healthy development isn’t limited to vaccinations and veterinary appointments.
A puppy’s early environment matters too.
Age-appropriate handling, interaction with people, time with the mother and littermates, safe exposure to everyday sights and sounds, play and positive experiences all contribute to early development.
Our Code therefore includes expectations around both the physical and behavioural welfare of puppies.
Honest Listings and Transparency
One of Pupify’s goals is to make it easier for puppy families and breeders to have clearer conversations.
That starts with accurate information.
Breeders using Pupify are expected to represent their puppies and breeding programs honestly. That includes information about breed, age, parentage, health, registration and other important details.
Known health information that could reasonably affect a puppy’s future care should not be deliberately hidden from a prospective family.
We also encourage breeders to be prepared to answer questions about their breeding dogs, health testing, how puppies are raised, socialization, veterinary care, contracts and what happens if a family can no longer keep a dog.
Good connections start with good information.
What the Code Does — and What It Doesn’t Do
This distinction is important.
The Pupify Breeder Code of Care & Ethics is not a breeder certification or verification program.
Pupify does not represent that it has personally inspected, certified or independently verified every breeder who uses the platform.
The Code establishes the standards breeders using Pupify are expected to follow.
Breeders remain responsible for their own practices, the accuracy of the information they provide and compliance with the laws and regulations that apply to them.
Likewise, puppy families should continue to ask questions, review documentation, research the breed and breeder, and make their own informed decisions.
A listing appearing on Pupify should never replace that process.
What This Means for Puppy Families
If you’re looking for a puppy, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
A conversation with a breeder might include questions such as:
- What health testing has been completed on the parents?
- Can I see the results?
- Are there known health concerns within this breed?
- How are the puppies raised?
- What socialization have they experienced?
- What veterinary care have they received?
- Can you tell me about the mother and father?
- At what age will the puppy be ready to leave?
- Is there a written contract?
- What happens if I can no longer care for the dog?
Choosing a puppy shouldn’t feel rushed.
Take the time to understand the breeder, the puppy and whether the breed is appropriate for your family and lifestyle.
What This Means for Breeders
It’s intended to make expectations clearer.
We want breeders to be able to show prospective families how they raise their puppies, discuss the decisions they make within their breeding programs and provide the information families need to make informed choices.
We also recognize that responsible practices can look different between breeds and individual circumstances.
That’s one reason the Code emphasizes appropriate veterinary guidance, breed-specific health considerations and compliance with local laws rather than trying to create one rigid breeding formula for every dog.
The Pupify Breeder Code of Care & Ethics gives breeders and puppy families a clear point of reference for the standards expected across the platform.
Building a Better Dog Marketplace
Pupify was created to make connections within the dog community clearer and more transparent.
As the platform grows, that responsibility grows with it.
Our Breeder Code of Care & Ethics is one part of that commitment.
We won’t pretend that a policy alone can guarantee responsible breeding.
What it can do is establish expectations, encourage better questions, promote transparency and make animal welfare part of the conversation from the beginning.
Because when it comes to breeding and placing puppies, the goal shouldn’t simply be finding a home.
It should be finding the right home while putting the welfare of the dogs first.
